This is a series of books about life in Australia – one for each year from 1939. They describe happenings that affected people, real people. The whole series, to coin a modern phrase, is designed to push your buttons, to make you remember and wonder at things forgotten.
The books might just let nostalgia see the light of day, so that oldies and youngies will talk about the past and re-discover a heritage otherwise forgotten. Hopefully, they will spark discussions between generations, and foster the asking and answering of questions that should not remain unanswered.
In 1945, the Japanese gave up and the Germans gave up. In Oz, the Japanese were hated for the next twenty years at least. Bulldogging and buckjumping were quite popular, and the distinction between Communism and Socialism was not all the clear. Our servicemen had been promised their jobs back when they returned to civvies, but this presented lots of problems.
Anyway, getting transport for them to return home to Oz was not easy. The Brits were starving, and our own Bundles for Britain helped a lot. Rubber tyres for cars and bikes will be on sale next year, rationing of silk stockings will be abolished. Could the world get any better?

Great book to read
We purchased this book for an 80th birthday and it’s on its way to its destination. My husband was gifted one for his 80th nearly two years ago, now his brother has reached 80, we thought one was a perfect gift for him. 🥰
Very disappointed as I thought there’d be lots of photos. There’s none!

Received promptly and had a Quick Look but as it’s a present didn’t like to open it too much.

I bought a book a few years ago as an 80th birthday present. I bought this one for another friend turning 80 in January. I thought there was a lot of photos in the other book. There aren’t any in this one. A bit disappointed.
I'm a bit disappointed by the whole experience. The order was incomplete on arrival - although it was rectified quickly.
i am also disappointed by the contents of the book. I expected some photos from this era scattered throughout the book. Even though the book has a lot of information, the fact that it is just text is pretty boring.
I would not order again.
I've now bought 1939..41..42..43..44..45..46..47..for my family..then started again with 68..71..74 for my children..everyone is delighted with them..my 1941 brother was so pleased that I then bought him the rest of the war years..great books..well written ..good sense of humour...easy reading!!
